First post. I have some old cedar boxes that the furniture stores used to give away when you bought a cedar chest. Quite a while ago so some of you younger guys might not remember them. I use them to store my Morgans and silver eagles in. Almost all my coins are in air-tites except for the slabbed stuff. Was wondering if the cedar wood could cause any problems. I do keep silica for dryness in it also. These are beautiful, well constructed boxes and I use them for some jewelry also and never had a problem. Let me know if anyone thinks they would cause a problem both with air-tite and non air-tite stored silver and copper coins.

Thanks

Wood isn't a great storage place for coins -- the gases it releases as it ages will color the coins (I believe it turns the silver coins gray/black, but someone chime in if I'm wrong). I've heard that if you have to use a wooden box, mahogany is a good choice. I've heard both that cedar is one of the better woods and one of the worst, so depends on who you believe.

My suggestion would be to use the same type of wood box that silverware(sterling silverware not the silver plate stuff) is sold in and stored.

My mother has both her silverware set, and my grandmother's and neither of them have turned any other color except the normal tarnish associated with silver.

These boxes are felt lined and don't seem to cause any blackening of the silver items stored in them. However, I have no idea what wood is used in these. I'm thinking it may be mahogony, but I'm not 100% sure.
