I found this while rummaging through some loose coins in my fathers collection. It has the "ring" of silver to it when bounced on a table top.

It's 156 years old...and I have no idea as to where it came from, or as to how it made its way to California. Any thoughts?

Immigration to the US went up massively in the 1840 and 50s so prob made its way over as the loose change in someones pocket on the way to the new world.
