Excuse the poor pictures as I am watching this coin online. To me the red flag is that it just looks too Clean and Shiny without any patina.. Is there any thing to look for that shows if a coin has been dipped.. I would think that the high points would have some wear instead of being bright silver.. Edited by D 02/18/2010 9:33 pm

wear isn't really associated with dark spots,,,,,meaning slight wear does have slightly less of a shine when you hold it 45 degrees off light...many coins do get cleaned, but the trouble is when the luster is stripped from the coin by harsh cleaning agents. there are coin conservationists who "clean coins in an acceptable way does not devalue the coins . there's a slight blue tint at parts of your coin..that could just be lighting reflections....lets see what the masters say.....I don't think your lusters stripped, lets see about the cleaning?

What a beautiful coin. Look at that monster strike! I don't know if it's been dipped but it's wonderful.

The thing about dipping is it is very hard to tell, if not impossible at times. If this coin has been cleaned, it has only been a dip and is not unattractive in any way. But I don't believe this coin look "too clean". There are probably about a thousand UNC, untoned/untarnished Morgan dollars on ebay at any given time and those are 50 years older. As far as the high points, this is an AU/UNC coin and there shouldn't be much flatness... Judging by the reverse, it looks UNC. But the chatter in the fields on the obverse says AU to me...

D23.... it can very easily be "whizzed"...ask for high definition close ups... or ask the question straight up... (remember my experience). I will post this very soon on Glency's suggestion. H

Dipped or whizzed, doesn't matter here. The strike is great.1936 is the lowest priced of all GeorgeV 25 cents, you probably won't find a more attractive example for the money.

compare with this rainbow toned ebay example: http://cgi.ebay.com/1936-Canada-25-...66_W0QQitemZ370294449996QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_2?hash=item563744e74c d23, when you say "for the money", plse tell us the asking price or your statement is meaningless. personally I dont think it was dipped, cleaned or whizzed but the colour is odd, it was shot under neon tubes or tungsten that gives it a blue hue. Natural lighting would show the patina better.

malibu.. If you read my statement carefully there is no mention of money...
The post above yours was refering to the nice strike and condition of the coin which in itself is worth money for a 1936.

oops, sorry, I confused d23 and DBM. d23, out of curiosity, if you don't mind the question, what's the asking price of the one you're watching online?

It looks a little to bright ,On the other hand it does not look whizzed on the obverse because the scratches are to pronounced, whizzing would blurr them. I agree with Malibu the lighting the coin was taken under could highlight the brightness that looks strange. Like someone said ask the seller if they think it's cleaned or altered. Overall it looks great , good luck if your bidding.
