Around the face area and a few other spots on the obverse there are copper/gold color spots. Almost looks like on a few that there is corrosion. The one one the Kings fore head appears to be an extra piece of metal (maybe from the die)

Thanks M... I would have never thought of that..

Looks like I got taken for a few bucks from a dishonest seller...

Good thing I didn't sell the farm on this one...

The amber - purplish color is off.. First one I have seen and I must admit the lacquer sure covers scratches..

This one goes in my file for reference....

Could you help educate us?

Why did the seller (or someone) put amber lacquer on it? Was it to cover up scratches? Could you see it with the naked eye?

Lacquer was used to preserve coins.....It works.....scratches will hold the lacquer as will any imperfection on the coin. A skilled eye like Louis from CCCS can see thru it. Lacquer remover is a quick tool, however, I suggest an expert do it on suspected top end coins.

karrlot.. I can only assume it was done to deceive for monetary gain. With the naked eye and coin in hand the scratches were not visible as there was lots of glare ( which I know now was not lustre )

Here's the same coin after the lacquer was removed.. Judge for yourself and I believe the reason will be self explantory..

Lacquer, 'Gold' Plating, Cleaning, Electrolysis, Counterfeits. Its a shame people do this for a quick buck as it frustrates collectors and destroys a piece of history. :(
