It's nice to think about, though, isn't it? I would imagine that, if there are actually any out there, they have been carefully hoarded and are as MS as the day they left the mint.

Just think of the reaction at PCGS when someone submits an MS68 '64 Peace dollar.....

I think PCGS would be tore between what they want to do as numismatists and what the legal thing to do would be, and I question which way they would sway

PCGS slabbed the 1974 aluminum cent, and it is just as illegal as the 1964-D Peace dollar. So I think that their position is pretty clear when it comes to these types of coins.

Have there been any announcments about a 64D coming to the surface? Whoever would slabbed one, I would think would want to milk as much publicity as they could out of it. There was one delivered to LBJ by special currier. Being "the salt of the earth" I'm sure he must've turned his in along with the common folk.

I dont think so, if anyone has one they definately want to keep it as quiet as possible because it is illegal to own and they will come and confiscate it no ifs ands or buts about it and if someone has one they dont want that to happen. Thats the main reason why there are no known 64-D's in existance even though we all know that it is pretty far fetched to beleive that they actually destroyed each and every one they minted

As I recall no one ever counted them coming back or even looked at them. A coin collector working in the mint could've just thrown a couple of 1925's in that bin.
