Trade combined with a purchase from a friend and a distinguished forum member. A benefit of sharing the same interest, knowing each other's collecting appetite, frequent communication and trust being built over time.

The first is a 1603 German Teutonic Knights Taler (DAV 5848) depicting the grandmaster on the obverse and a knight rider on the reverse - I do not collect German Talers yet the Grandmaster on the obverse is Archduke Maximilian of Habsburg, giving me a great reason to add such a classic beauty to the collection. I am really pleased.

The other Taler is a 1621 Ferdinand II (1617-1637) Taler (DAV-3168) from minted in the Ensisheim Mint (unfortunately NGC got the slab wrong), Alsace region (French). I do not have this type, and really like the original dark patina and very classic design from the era.

In all seriousness, thanks for the kind words. The hobby has certainly been more rewarding since we have been in communication (through this forum I might add). Part of the "other end" of the deal:

I really love these coins!
Just a question though... Why is the name of the emperor on the second coin spelled FERDIANDUS, and not FERDINANDUS?
