Before putting coins in a 2X2, should the coin be wiped with a soft cloth? I know not to use brushes. Thanks,

Not a good idea to wipe at all unless you know you have left a finger print.

I use sandpaper. NO, don't wipe coins with what you think is a soft cloth. Just put them in the 2x2 as is. Remember that just the slightest substance stuck to the cloth could leave a scratch on the coin.

I recommend canned air before enclosing a coin or even before you take a photo. John1

Thanks for all the info. What I have been doing is while wearing a t-shirt, I will grab the bottom of the shirt and rub the coin before putting it in a 2X2. I will stop that right away.

The answer is simple....NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Never wipe a coin. I just posted a question to the effect" can a coin moving in a 2x2 cause hairlines?". The consensus was yes. Any rubbing can hurt the coin. I dip in clean xylene to kill any surface organics, air dry and encapsulate. Jim

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. Never use a T-Shirt for anything where you don't want lint. People don't even use them on a car with a great paint job. Even if you try cleaning the windows on your car with a T-Shirt, you would see LINT. Also, imagine all the body fluids on that T-Shirt from you. And if your a slob, you know probably have Mustard and Ketchup on your coins too. Note that if you do the laundry and dry your T-Shirts, look at the lint trap. That's what your doing to your coins.

I wouldn't use the canned air, either! I've seen to many coins left with residue left behind because of it. I'm no chemist, but there are propellants in there. It's not just air!

But was that so called cleaned T-Shirt washed with a hankerchief that you blew your nose in? Was it washed with your socks that you used while shoveling that stuff a dog left on your lawn? Oddly enough even really, really cleaned T-Shirts are loaded with lint. But I still wonder about using one while your wearing it. Do you sweat a lot? Many just use a cotton glove if it has to be pushed into place. I usually round out any slots that appear to be tight first. easy to do. remove the plastic slides and using a coin larger than the slot, turn it around to open the slot a bit more. Some use a knife.
