Hi there, I'm somewhat of a novice at collecting so forgive me if this is an odd question. how do you decide where to send a coin for grading, if it is worth sending to get graded, and what does having it certified do other than letting you know it is authentic? once again thank you for any input, I appreciate it.

What grading service to use is strictly up to you. PCGS, NGC, and ANACS are among the best in the business. I myself prefer to use ANACS others here like the other two that I mentioned. As for certification?, well it lets know that it is real, and in the event you decide to sell it gives the buyer the same assurance.

As far as to tell whether or not a coin is worth getting graded, again it is the decision of the owner. I have seen boxes upon boxes of 2009 business strike Lincoln cents that were graded. They were not worth the cost of grading. However, the gentleman that has them believes that his MS60 and higher 2009 cents will soon value above what he has in them. And he may be right. If you have a nice coin that you would like to have graded and slabbed and would look nice displayed as such, then I say go ahead and have it done. to the forum.

JakeW I am also new to collecting, about 3 months now and I truly regret that I didn't get into collecting earlier in my life. "That's life"! Anyway on grading, I recently joined NGC for two reasons; actually 3 reasons. I have read over and over that NGC is the best, and that's my opinion. I also joined because I could afford $39 a year membership fees an I do like their web-site.My 3rd reason is I honestly like their plastic-slabs and labels better than the others. I have submitted over 10 coins to NGC for certification and using their site to place orders is super-easy and I feel cheap too. My Morgan CC collection ran about $30 a coin and that $30 is due to the coins value. Cheaper coins like modern silver eagles runs about $16 a coin. So all in all, those prices are fair and I get my coins back on average in 2 weeks tops. And I also like having total control over my coins being certified and "not a dealer". That I like. And all in all, NGC certifying is fairly cheap. Again, these are all my opinions only. Certifying a rare coin,(example) like my 1889CC, to me, is a must. That coin is "very rare" and very costly and I want it registered, certified and slabbed for protection. If you pay a high price for a coin that is pure enjoyment to have, to hold and to see, its worth having certified. The only drawback to certification is the "touch and feel" of a beautiful master piece. That we do sadly loose.
