Ok, first time posting outside the new person forum. :)

Found this in change today: not very exciting, but I thought I'd ask anyway.

The mint mark is filled in. Is this a common error?

Nice photo for a first post!

Hopefully one of the CCF experts will come along shortly and give an explanation for the cause of the filled MM ....... so we can all learn.

I'm thinking a die chip filled it ..... but that is a guess.

Experts opinion?

Hi and WELCOME!,

This is a very normal D. The mint mark punch used was extremely worn. The trick is to find a 1979 D five cent piece that has a D with a clear mint mark that has a nice opening in it. It's probably next to impossible.

The D on this particular coin is also slightly damaged. being very normal also means it is not odd. If you look at several hundred of them over time, you will see that the D's on 1979 dated nickels all look pretty much like this.

Thanks,
Bill
