I was sorting some change at my desk and decided to take a look at the dimes. I usually don't pay much attention to dimes other than to check for silver. At any rate, I noticed the obverse on a 2008 dime was smaller than the other dimes. Noticably smaller. The logo "In God We Trust" fit much better with the "We" fitting in the field rather than being crushed against the rim of the coin.

When was this change made? Also, anyone know of any cases where the old obverse got slipped into the batch? I attempted to google this, but found no information at all.

Got any pics? I'd like to see what you are talking about. I have only recently started paying attention to dimes, too.

Are you sure it is not a misaligned die? I have found a few from the '80's where the WE is further away from the rim, but it is because the die was misaligned to the right. If the font is smaller, I'd like to see it.

Actually, I think I see what you are talking about. I have been looking through a slew of dimes in date order, and jumped ahead to the 2K's and it looks like somewhere around then there may have been a design change. I see it from at least 2000 on. Like I said, I'm learning dimes as I go, so some of the Roosie pros will probably chime in and correct us.

Looking back I've found a 2004 with the smaller obverse and a 1999 with the larger obverse. So far I've got the change narrowed down too between 1999 and 2004.

They made the bust slightly smaller in 2000 because of the extra width the 2 and the zeros took up. They needed a little more room between the neck and the rim.
