OK, so I succumbed to the peer pressure, I bought a Dansco 7070 Type set album and it came in the mail yesterday.

I started putting a few coins that I deemed worthy into the album, but 3 of the coins I would like to put in are in US Mint Capsules.

I bought the 3 coin silver proof 1976 bi-centennial set a few months ago, because I knew my 7070 day would come. But the capsules seem sealed and I have no clue how to get them out without damaging the coins inside. My initial thought was a few light taps with a hammer, but thought some here may have already opened these and be able to give me some advice.

Thanks in Advance.

Ken

Take the holder in hand with a sharp pointed knife.Put the knife tip against the seam that runs around the holder and turn the knife back and forth as if your drilling a hole.Continue drillling and the knife tip will produce a hole through the plastic. With the knife tip inside the hole you should be able to start prying the 2 pieces of plastic apart and you will have 2 halfs with no damage to the coins.

Or you could use a Butane torch and just melt the plastic off.
If your going to try the knife method, be really carefull not to scratch the coins or cut your fingers off.

Next time you go to the dentist ask for an old dental pick. These work great and you do not have to worry about cutting yourself.

I do not remember my 1976 three-coin set being that difficult. It was more than 15 years ago, but I recall that I used a utility knife to loosen the seam and then popped them open.

I still have all of the OGP material in a box. If I get a chance, I will look at the capsules and see how "damaged" they look.

Congratulations!

Well, I looked at the packaging from my three-coin set this weekend.

The capsules are, well, destroyed. I suppose it was more difficult than I remembered.

Maybe I am being a little harsh. They did not come apart clean, but they obviously did come apart.
