This is really really interesting, particularly because I have a large amount of old FRF notes that I plan on sending back to the Banque de France for new Euros.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...TRK:MEWAX:IT

A 200FRF note would have an exchange rate of $38, but from the likes of this auction, it's already way over it. Plus, it still has a few days to go.

I've seen a lot of bidding wars over the old FRF notes, even though they're going to expire in 2012. Why is is? And should I send my circulated Franc notes back to the BdF or should I keep them and put them on ebay?

Yeah... that's why I'm only going to keep the UNC ones, although they're ~220Fr... I just don't know what to do with the circulated ones: to send them back later or put them on ebay now.

And no, has something happened in France recently? Is the ECB going to revert to the national currencies after the whole Greece thing?

France and Spain are about to fall into nothingness as Greece. We knew that the E was a bad thing and so did England.Silver and Gold, my friend.I have many different notes from all over the world. I have carried plenty of paper. Hold the F for a bit.Don't sell them off yet.

Well... the F I have is going to turn either into the E or into nothing at all.

By the way, not even the old Deutsche Marks have experienced these kinds of bidding wars! I wonder why collectors are still going crazy over the Franc notes. Yes, they're beautiful, but they're about to expire...

I wouldn't say so much about France just yet! They're economy is still growing I think... at .5% a year as of last year? I think the real problem is still in Greece, and after that, maybe the UK first and then Spain.

The old Marks are still holding on.I have Irish and Scottish pound notes.I believe France is gonna take a hit shortly and Spain. The UK will always be backed by the world.

According to xe.com, FF200 = US$41.53. Current bid is $36.01 - that's still way under face value.

Ah. Then perhaps the high bidder lives local, or is buying multiple lots off the seller, or has otherwise negotiated a shipping discount... or has (like me) forgotten to include shipping in the bid price.

Still, if you say it's a pattern you've seen on other French notes, perhaps it does mean that they're becoming collectors items. Nostalgia for the franc, perhaps, especially if many are in fact being redeemed and destroyed.

Meanwhile, off on the tangent...

I don't think the European Union ever thought of putting any kind of mechanism in place for countries that either want to secede from the euro or go so basket case that they deserve to be kicked out before they drag the whole Eurozone down with them. I don't think anything short of war, or at least a military coup, will achieve that. Greece, unfortunately, has plenty of experience with both.

Neither of the two (UK/US) is in the euro area, and thus their views are not terribly relevant when it comes to the euro. Maybe from an American perspective a European currency is "bad" indeed, don't know. But I sure appreciate the currency union, both from an economic and a very practical point of view. Now whether the € will still be around in 10 or 20 years ... who knows.

Well, it would make sense to sell them within the next 23 months. 17-Feb is the deadline ...
