While roll searching pennies today I came across two 1996 pennies I think are Canadian but I've never seen this reverse. My camera wont take good pics, sorry. the obverse has Elizabeth II on it like usual but the reverse just says one penny and has a crowned gate with what looks like shackles hanging on either side? can anyone tell if its just a regular coin or something different?

Circulated coins have the word Canada on them.. If there is no "Canada" on the reverse then without seeing a picture I would assume it is from some other country..

That sounds like an English penny.

Interesting - people do get so used to the slang term (penny) they already expect the mint to follow the suit!

The crowned portcullis (a "portcullis" is the spiked gate at the entrance to a castle, raised and lowered with chains) was the mediaeval badge or symbol for the Palace of Westminster, and since the English/British Parliament currently meets in that building, it has become the symbol of Parliament.

Click here where you can see the portcullis used on a British government website, and you can even download a 9-page pdf factsheet on the history of the portcullis symbol, if you like.

And don't get me started on the whole penny/cent thing again. Just refer to my rantings here in this thread. It should be added that jakeW's coin is a decimal penny, worth 1/100th of a pound, not a predecimal penny worth 1/240th of a pound like the one in that earlier thread.
