I spent some at the post office, work, local supermarket, and the gas station. Had an interesting response at the local market. I gave the cashier 7 of them, it was an older lady. She was like I thought these weren't around anymore. She looks them over and says you've must have been saving them for a long time. I said nope, I got them at the bank. She seem surprised. As I was leaving, she was showing the shiny coins to another cashier. I got a chuckle out of it. She wasn't even aware the dollar coins were still used. Mission accomplished!

I have spent a couple thousand dollars of these over the last 2 years and it still amazes me at the responses that I get. Everything from "We don't take foreing coins" to "What is this". And of course most people just want to buy them out of the register and keep them. My favorite thing to do with them is go to a coin booth in a flea market where they are selling them for 2-3 dollars and buy other coins and pay with them. LOL

I spent about $8.00 worth of some brand new Millard Fillmore's the other day for breakfast at Spangels...(they have a good breakfast !)
Anyway the lady reached out her hand to receive my money in the drive-thru and as soon as I put them in her hand.....she takes a very close look at them and says "OH !" ....smiled at me and then gave me my change and turned around and showed some co-workers the shiny gold dollars !! ....it does make ya chuckle doesn't it !

I spend the dollar coins every chance I get. Some of the grocery stores around this area have banks in them. So, when I get paper $1 bills, I look quickly for any radars, repeaters, etc. then head over to a teller. I exchange them for coins. I always hand the bills over and ask for dollar coins, making the comment that I don't like "dirty money". Sometimes I get a quizzical look, but it gets people thinking.

I have pushed half dollars on all of the merchants I use in town over the past three years, and at least three of them are now giving them in change on a regular basis. It only takes someone being diligent about circulating the coinage for it to receive recognition and acceptance. I just can't wait for the $5, $10, and $20 coins to finally be minted again .
