Need some help here- found something today I can't identify! I found this strange little guy in a can of nickels, it's approximately the size of a nickel but copper colored, and it has a partially reeded edge. I can't tell if the reeding is intentionally incomplete or just worn down. One side says "Fimmtiu Aurar Island 1981" with what I think is a dragon in the center, and the other says "50" with a shrimp(?). The shrimp-like-critter makes me think of one of the island nations, like Bermuda or something, but when I tried to Google it all I could get were sites that weren't in English. If the sites had been French or Spanish I probably could've muddled through, but these were in Swedish or Danish (which makes me rethink the island nation connection) or Klingon for all I could tell. I showed it to several people at work, we're all stumped! Help please! Rachel [:p]

Take a look at Iceland - 50 Kronur KM 31. The coin is dated 19817 not 1981 but otherwise it fits your description.

I meant to say 1987 - It might pass in a nickel roll.

Klingon coins usually have a red tint to them and the devices are usually some heroic battle scene on the reverse. A few have images of Ka'las on the obverse. The coins' base metal is usually Latinum (often mis-spelled Ladinum by Ferengee). The "shrimp" is actually an akula, a spredatory beast on the Klingon home world which inhabits mud basins and swamps (it can reach 20 meters in size). K'a'pla'h! Snerd (Klingon for Fred)

Thanks Fred, I needed that! Iceland, huh? That would explain why I couldn't make out one word of any of the websites. But, I still insist the date is 1981, my eyes are going but that ain't a seven! Rachel [:p]

OK, I think I located it. It is smaller than a nickel - less than 1 mm larger than a US cent. It is a KM 26 from Iceland a Fimmtiu (50) Aurar in Bronze. The date would be 1981 mintage 10,000,000 copies. The Dragon head is a version of a Norse Long Ship Scroll Head and the animal is actually a shrimp. Icelandic Shrimp are very good. I used to go to a Long Island restaurant where they were a menu feature. I don't know if they really came from Iceland but they were very good. In Krause - the KM 26 is not illustrated in my edition but the 26a is. That coin is only dated 1986 and I failed to look above it to see if there was an earlier dated number 26.

Hey Fred I think they stole that one. An Akula is also a Russian submarine and predatory beast in the ocean. Got a mail bid in for four "wolfhound" tokens--2/27th Inf.

Cool- thanks for the info! Now I can add Iceland to my ever-growing list of countries for my world coin collection. It is closer in size to a US cent than a nickel now that I compare them, but our coin counting machine is very inaccurate so I'm not surprised it threw in in with the nickels. [:0] Rachel [:p]

Yeah, akula is Russian for shark and for their aptly-named attack class submarines. As a Trekkie, I've noticed a lot of similarities between Klingons and the old stereotypical Soviets, not only in mannerisms, but in language which, to English speakers, sounds abrupt and sharp. However, as a Klingon observed in one of the Star Trek movies (Undiscovered Country?), one has not truly experienced Shakespeare until one has heard it in its original Klingon. K'a'pla'h! Snerd P.S. Still fighting wildfires here in AZ.

You will remember that on two occasions you and I found similar coins.
Well, not quite this time, but close. In the last year I have found two coins in circulation with "Ore" on them. Not sure if that's Norway or Iceland. Whichever, at least we know it's cold there.
