I'm pretty sure this is a fake/altered 1877. If I'm not mistaken the N in ONE on the reverse is always weak on the lower right side on a genuine specimen. This coin clearly has a bold N in ONE.

Please correct me if I'm wrong
Rest in Peace

No doubt in my mind this is not an authentic piece. N in ONE and EN in CENT should all show weakness. This shows it no where... and along with what johnny pointed out... STAY AWAY!

Not only all that has been mentioned, this would be one heck of a deal. Red Book price for a genuine 1877 Indian is $1100.00, and he's asking $495.00. Even in G condition, the price is around $900.00.

Just a side note:

I look at the price of coins and compare it to the Red Book, and other sources, to see if the seller is asking a normal price for what they're advertising.

Case in point; I started a thread about a coin grading company I've never heard of, and one of the coins pictured, an 1884-S Morgan graded by the homemade grading company at MS-68, and has a price tag of around $940,000.00, if it were graded by a reputable grading service like PCGS, ANACS, NGC, and the seller is only asking $2300.00.

Incredible deals like that are a give away to something fishy.

The guy says this coin is not returnable yet just below that he states that he is so honest that all of his coins are returnable.Wouldn't touch this with a ten foot pole unless you get it for a dollar to fill an album hole.

Here's another one to stear clear of: A $3000.00 coin starting at $86.00, and from a highly questionable grading service:

He's obviously a scumbag if he lists it as an 1877 cent then tries to say that it might not be. I'd pass on it even if he didn't say it was fake.

Actually... the reverse die for the proof had a strong N

this was just discussed in a post this past week.. so it IS possible for an 1877 to have a strong N , seems only 2 of 6 reverse dies were used that year- all non-proof coins will have the weak N
