I've had this coin laying around for awhile now. though it looks bronze in the scanned image I think it's gold. Can anyone tell me what it is?
I'm American so I'm not positive it's British

Looks like a half sovereign. About £100 real money, sort of $150!

I have doubts about this coin, it doesn't look gold thought that could be the picture. The details are very shallow and the coin doesn't appear to be struck but cast. There is corrosion and dark stains that you would not expect to see on a gold coin. I believe this is a copy.

Anyone know what the real one should weigh? I wanted to keep it because of the age but if it's fake I have no use for it.

because they are undenominated, it is difficult to tell a half-sov from a full sov, when one only has a pic with no scale, nor given diameter:

half-sov weighs 3.994 grams; dia.=19mm
a full sov is 7.988 g.; dia.=22mm

I share Echizento's reservations, but will wait for the weight ...

This design is a half-sovereign; in the 1840's, the full sovereign had a wreath around the shield.

And I share the suspicions about authenticity; I'd want to hear a good reason why a 22k gold coin has turned brownish-purple in places.

As I stated I'm not experienced with British coins(or very experienced with American coins). After reading your comments I became curious and dipped this coin in jewelry cleaner which failed to bring out any luster.I then imaged it under a small digital scope I just purchased. The results don't fare well for its authenticity or my knowledge of coins. Thanks to you all for your help,I learned much here.Comments on the image?

It doesn't look gold! It's copy, I think!
