I was recently sent a magazine that boasts selling 1954 half pennies for $38,000. What makes this coin valuable, Is there something different about the one in the magazine to the half dozen I have in my basement? It also mentions the 1923 at a slightly lesser cost.
Thanks.

according to Renniks 1954 was a year of average mintage, and a Gem example has CV = $ $125.
So, is the mag talking about an Aussie half-d ? If so, could it be a "proof" ? Or maybe an error ?

Yep, the proof 1954 halfpenny has a CV of around $35,000. Ordinary 1954 halfpennies are in the 50¢ to $100.00 range, depending on condition.

And 1923 is the scarcest date for halfpennies. It's only slightly less valuable than it's more famous cousin, the 1930 penny.

O ok that clears things up a bit. I need to learn more about terms. I'm very new to this. Had a collection for years and now just learning. Thanks.
Peace,
