I know PVC is a no no...but how about those large durable plastic containers that you can get at Home Depot or Lowes ? I don't know if they contain PVC or not. I need something large to store my coins in for about 5 years or so. I'm transferring overseas and need to put all my coins into longterm storage.

I thought about a foot locker but most of these contain plywood and I'm not so sure that is good either.

I think it will be OK as long as you put them into ziploc bags with a desiccant pack. If you can find food grade containers that would be better. By the way where you going if I may ask?

Tim, I will be going to Russia to work on a project with the company I work for. I have several Danscos, several are complete. Many, many slabbed coins, gold, silver, colonials, some slabbed foreign coins, paper.....I got a lot of stuff ! I just cannot take this in and out of Russia customs easily and therefore it is just not worth the risk. If the large plastic storage containers at Home Depo would not be hazardous to the coins over a five year period that would be great !

I believe you would be good with that but as Tim said, use desicant packets for moisture.

keep metal types separate....copper,nickel, silver, gold....
unlike metals can produce electric currents that will cause unwanted results(verdigris, corrosion, etc)
Make sure lock-up is secure, dry, and temperate(moderate temperature fluxuations)...BON VOYAGE!!

Another vote for bags and desiccant packs. Albums can go into the super size ziplock bags, then put those into the plastic containers.

Mark, if you put an album into a sealed ziploc, I think the desiccant pack should be inside the ziploc.

Yes, put the desiccant INTO the ziplock. It will do no good in the plactic tub as it will very quickly pick up moisture and be worthless.

Think you'll find the Gallon sized Zip Lock bags fit a Dansco and are really snug. Still prior to sealing them, push out as much air as possible. Any loose coins should be safe in those plastic rolls or even 2x2's. HOWEVER, if you do use any 2x2 flips, I suggest you do not staple them for long term storage. I've found if you try a little test on them, blow into a stapled side, you find your breath goes right through. I tape all mine with 3M clear tape on the opening side of the 2x2's. On plastic rolls too, those tops are not always air tight so a piece of clear tape around that top would help. Any Proof or Uncirculated sets also place in Zip Lock Bags.
Naturally the best method is to send everything to me and never worry about your coins again.

Well good luck with your time in Russia. I do not blame you for not wanting to take any of your stuff with you. I lived in Sicily for 3 years and although it was nice to live in a foreign country, the petty thieves targeted homes where Americans lived. I was lucky and did not have any problems. I had all my stuff in a small suitcase that I left with my mom and dad who stored it up in their attic. It was at the time a few hundred darksiders and some wheat cents in baby food jars. They came out of it in great shape though. That was nearly 18 years ago, so now I would be out wondering what to with the collections the wife and I have amassed over years.
