On the scale the weight was from 2.2 to 2.3.. when I took the picture it read 2.3.. in this picture it reads 2.2 so it is that point range. The edge is perfectly round with no marks ( I tried this spooning thing for 1/2 hour on a penny and it left visible hammered type marks. The rim is smooth with no marks..there is copper fragments protuding from under the rim as shown in the picture.   |

I don't get what people would expect a scale that reads to one decimal place to say in this case!
In theory, a speck of dust on an MS70 will make it round from 2.2500001 up to 2.3; likewise, in theory, an AU50 will round down from 2.2499999 to 2.2. The scale is just doing it's best.
Who even knows the tolerance of the planchet weights? To me, 2.2 or 2.3 -- the coin has normal weight.
It seems like a neat coin though. I lack the expertise to know how it got to looking like that.

The inside part of the rim is square cut not rolled, as its a bit hard to see in the picture.
Alas.. It would just be nice to find out what really happened on this coin...

yes, extremely neat...
seems like it is perhaps folded over somehow...
perhaps a planchet that was not intended for this coin?
or when the mint run "some" other countries coins, someone by mistake put Canadian cent dies in the machine until they realized.....
who knows....
Suggestion: get an expert, like Louis at CCCS to have a look at it..

I guess I was just saying that rounding isn't going on here, because a true 2.25g coin doesn't exist in nature. Also, apologies for detracting from the main theme of the post. I'll be interested to know more opinions when the owner gets them. I tentatively vote for damage, but not out of jealousy -- just out of confusion for what else it could be. (Luckily, it's not a democracy, though!) It's definitely a cool find. |

No worries - we are having a good time! The only thing you aren't permitted is to describe a collectible item as "junk" - then you'll get some - including me upset a little.

Yes, I'm glad a few of you guys on here are sticking up for the "inquiring collector". I feel exactly the same as hhbkiddo: it's a terrible shame when a collector gets constantly shot down with "junk".
I personally have about 2-3 tubes of oddities, many of which may be post-mint damage, but they're worth more than face-value to me! I know for a fact that this 2005 cent would make it in these tubes if I found it.
I actually have seen it be said that (to paraphrase) "it's a disservice to your coins' inheritors to keep junk". Me, I'm taking my coins with me when I go!

I still say it is a plating error. IMO with no plating on the rim.....the coin would be a tad narrow which it is.....and the nice picture shows where the plating fell of of.....Note to all Canadians.....our reighbors to the south have grown (with just cause) to be wary of ANY ERROR as they are bombarded with home made errors.....if they can not explain it VERY QUICKLY...it becomes a fake..........I am an error collector as a few of you know. If anyone would like......we can start a thread on HOW TO IDENTIFY AN ERROR or PROVE IT TO BE FALSE or post mint. I can only use my experience and I do have a few examples. Regards MM
