Probably because the coins are thicker and because it is a solid disk not a ring with a hollow center. Imagine stretching and squeezing the coin into the shape of the ring and you will probably see how structure makes a difference.
Yup. However, if you want to do it, you can use a 22kt gold coin (like an AGE)and scratch its rim against the rim of a .999 fine gold coin, and you can see the difference.
