So my stepfather goes and gets his mail and comes back in and says "I'm rich I got a dime in the mail". I have him show me and its a letter from the march of dimes asking for donations. On the front of the envelope there is a clear window and attached inside is a dime. I look and its a nice shiny brand new 2009p dime. I cant find one in circulation, but he gets one out of the blue in the mail. Go figure.

Why would an organization send money to people and ask them for donations? Seems like a waste of money to me.

Too funny.
They send the dime as part of the advertising costs. Its a worthwhile charity, and if I remember right, they've been sending the dimes out for decades.

"that's over 30,000,000 a year!"
What is over 30,000,000 a year?

I usually send them $10 a year. Drop in the bucket - that is what 100x what they sent?
If only 1 in 100 do that, it adds up. I have a buddy who gives them $500 a year because they helped a family member of his once in the 80's.
There are surely other donors who give far, far more.
I don't have any idea how many dimes they send out, I doubt that its 30M.
It'd be a near project for someone to contact them and find out though. We may find out where all of the 2009 dimes went. LOL.

Quote: that's over 30,000,000 a year! Are you getting this number from taking the total country population and multiplying it by $0.10? I seriously doubt the march of dimes spends $30million a year face value on dimes to mail out, I would think this would put a big dent in their efforts. Just my opinion

Quote: Why would an organization send money to people and ask them for donations? Seems like a waste of money to me. Not if you look at ROI. It's an old, and often used, marketing strategy. Aside from the old saying "It takes money to make money", there is another that says, roughly "Give something to get something." As an example, many years ago there was a cold mailer that went out, I've forgotten who it was for, but it involved magazine subscriptions and might have been Publisher's Clearing House (before Ed McMahon), and the card had scratch-off spots for a variety of "prizes". The marketing strategy part came in because they also included (showing through a window in the envelope - an inducement to open the thing in the first place!) a shiny, new nickel! Human nature being what it is, you opened it for the nickel, scratched off the spots, usually won nothing, pocketed your free five cent scratcher, and emotionally felt conducive to the idea of buying some magazine subscriptions because they gave you something "valuable" for free. It's all about psychology. And it works! A study was later done and found that more orders for magazines came in from the mailers with the nickel than those sent out without one. I remember getting one of these and, being smarter than the average bear (or more greedy!), simply opened the envelope, took my free nickel, and tossed the marketing materials. You can't beat human beings for semi-irrational emotional responses! Steve

Mine was not a 2009. It was a 2005 or something like that.
