johnny, looks great...the 1916 is going to be a showstopper for me, unless I make a fantastic find like you did.

Steve - that is probably the case for most of us.
Flea markets, junk lots, relatives who collected that we don't know about, etc. LOL.

Quote: Your problem in aquiring an Album is why I stick to Whitman rather than Dansco, Littleton, etc. At least around me Whitman is common and a much larger variety of merchandise is available. Also, I feel Silver coins show up much better in a Blue Album. Copper coins really show up much better in a Blue Album. Although so many say Dansco is made better and I really have to agree with that, there are so many advantages with Whitman products. One is you can find or order the blank pages and those sheets of press on Gold letters and numbers and make your own album with whatever you want. Thanks Carl. I agree that they look really good in blue, though I would only purchase the ones that show both sides of the coin through sliders. The old whitman albums that only show 1 side just don't cut it for display or protection purposes imo, although they do have that cool looking "rare" fill-in for the 1916. :-) I actually only order my danscos off of ebay, and USPS media shipping appears to be the one to blame in this case.

The population reports for these FR-02s are quite low, so I'm sure there are more out there undiscovered. Don't find too many though, or the value of mine will go down.

Hope you are right, johnny. Only need to find 2...one for my set, and the other to ( cough ) slab and ( cough ) sell. If I ever where to bite the bullet and lay down a couple grand or more on a 1916, it would probably be in slab, and don't know if I could bring myself to free it to live in an album. So that hole would still be staring back at me. Why do I like these SLQ's?

LOL - if I bought it slabbed, I'm with you, it'd stay that way. AND man, it'd be great to find 2 and sell 1! Heck, maybe Alyssa Milano will knock on my door and tell me she has two hidden somewhere on her and I need to find them!!

johnny54321 - your set looks alot like mine - gradewise. I do have a few that you don't; however, I don't have a 1916, nor a 1923S. I scanned my set (obverse album pages) at 300dpi so they'd be small enough to fit here, and added them to my CCF gallery, if you'd care to have a looksee.

Congrats on the set! I'm working on a VF set (EF for later dates) and agree completely about the 19-D being very scarce. I think anyone who collects an early series will tell you about some of the surprising 'stoppers' they run into, the Barber threads are full of that. Anyway, congrats and let the upgrading begin!

Quote: Congrats on the set! I'm working on a VF set (EF for later dates) and agree completely about the 19-D being very scarce. WOWZERS! That will be one awesome set for sure! How's it coming? You should post some photos! I haven't decided what I am going for upgradewise after the set is complete, but it won't be that ambitious. I'm thinking I will set the minimum detail on the pre-1925s to have at least part of all 4 date digits displayed. As a result, it will probably be VG/Fine for most of the type 2s(my 1919s would qualify). I've seen G-6 1916s have at least the bottom portions of all 4 digits visible. That will be tough, but accomplishable eventually. Quote: I still need 11. I have a feeling I'll be waiting years for that 1916. You're getting there! That's good enough for some album pictures.

Nice set! It still amazes me how quickly you put it together. I still need 9, although that number has a good chance of being reduced to 7 by the end of the week.

If you read through this thread, the diagnostics are discussed and some resource links are provided. I also made a diagram with the 16 and 17 side by side. They only used 1 die for the 1916 and it has some differences compared to the die for the 17.
