I have come across two worn Buffalo nickels in my collection, with only enough of the dates legible to let me figure out what year they are. One is a 1925D and the otheris a 1924D. The weird thing about them is that if you're looking at the Indian head right side up and you turn the coin over in the usual way, the buffalo is rotated.

On the 25D, the buffalo is rotated about 30 degrees counter clockwise to where it should be. On the 24D the rotation is somewhat less but still noticeable, and still counter clockwise.

What is that all about?

If the dies used to make the coin are not in perfect 180 degree alignment with each other, there will be rotation. This was a semi-common occurance in early coinage but you dont see it too much in the 20th century issues. Depending on how much rotation has occured, it could add a premium. Nice find

Now if you found a buffalo with medal orientation, you would really have something!

Well, not all rotation will command a premium. Large cents, for instance, frequently had rotated dies and it almost never adds a premium on them. Dramatic rotations (>45 degrees) are generally the ones that will be desirable to error collectors.

Here is a PCGS article for a bit more info on the subject http://www.pcgs.com/articles/article2274.chtml
