Enlighten me. How does one create artificial color on an Indian Head cent, and how might this be reversed with a minimum of damage to the coin?

I don't know the answer to your question, but I've seen quite a few being sold over the years at empirecoins.net. They let you know if a coin has been re-colored, so they may have a direct answer.

RB-BN MS and Proof IHCs can be toned a bluish-purple with MS70(the coin cleaner, not the grade). As far as I know, it is irreversible without dipping the coin and that brings in a whole other set of problems. Copper is also susceptible to heat treatment.

All you can do is hope that it comes off with a dip in an inert organic solvent like acetone. If it doesn't you're stuck. Anything else that would remove it will also cause odd colors/appearance
