I find no less than 5 quick giveaways that identify it as a counterfeit. How many can you find? Questions and/or comments are encouraged.

Bar in Which "In God We Trust" isn't straight. Letters are too square.

It looks like the edge (the 3rd die) is smooth rather than grooved.

The second 8 in the date looks bigger than the first 8. Doesn't really match at all.

Good answers. The first thing I notoced when I received it was that it was light. Can't remember the specifics right now, but I think it was somewhere aroung 16 grams. Then I noticed the rotated dies and the reeding on the edge overlaps like it was applied using two different collar halves. Being positively sure that it was a fake, I decided to research a little more (this was my first Trade dollar purchase, real or fake) and came to te conclusion that it is the wrong die marriage for the year. That would explain the two different sized 8's. Other flaws include the rough rims and little to no relief (except on the out stretched arm). I knew darn well when I bought it that it was a fake, but I figured that it would be a cheap study so that when I purchase the real deal I will be more prepared as to what to look for.

I know very little about Trade dollars, but the first time I saw one in the Red Book, I knew I wanted one (how's that for compulsive?). Shortly thereafter, I bought a fake on ebay (refreshingly, it was a Buy it Now for $5. He may not have been allowed to say it was fake in the auction, but he wasn't trying to deceive). I put it in my type book as a placeholder and people can instantly tell it's not real, but no one has educated me as to why. Maybe y'all can help illuminate me? This is the picture from the auction. If you need more detail, perhaps I'll try to take a better one. Image Insert: TIA
