I just starting looking through my childhood coin collection and found a portuguese coin from 1866.

I've been trying to do research and all I've come up with is that, according to http://www.treasurerealm.com/coinpa.../Luiz_I.html the first 20 reiz coin in luiz I reign was in 1867, a year later.

nothing else online has shown anything referencing this coin.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, and welcome to the forum.

Although it doesn't say so on the coin itself, it was actually struck for use on the Azores Islands, and it is under that name that you'll find it listed in the catalogues. WorldCoinGallery page.

to the community,

This is from the Azores an listed as KM#15 in Krause. Issued from 1865-1866 in copper with a mintage for this year of 150,000. I would grade it at VG-10 with a value of about $5.00.
