Is this a 1859 Brass Penny can anyone help? I took a picture of 2 under the same lighting(desk light camera flash on). Obviously the top one is the question. Is there anything I can do to know. Thinking of sending for certification but to spend $50 for a normal one is not fun!

Take it outside in natural light and scratch the edge. Try a couple of regular ones as well so you know what color is normal.

The best way is to use a piece of Glass and lightly scratch the outer edge.. Brass will have a yellow effect..... DO NOT use metal to scratch as the 2 metals together can cause a weird reaction therefore the true color will not reveal itself...... Glass is the best way as I have done this many time when checking tokens....... No need to send it in unless you see YELLOW ... Then I will will buy it ..lol

you can also test for lead without scratching the coin... all brass from that era has trace lead with no exceptions that I've ever found.

Ok well you got me to scratch up two of my coins. Just on the edge. The brighter metal is definitely a different color under the toning. A regular one looks more like a shiny penny. This one looks like gold. Any one know where I should send it. I don't think it would get a grade but I just want to get it verified as brass.

CCCS is a service with a decent web site that handles single coin submissions. Just write on the form you think it's brass, they'll confirm for you, that's what they do. There are in Montreal and many here speak highly of them.

If you only want it confirmed, it doesn't really matter who you send it to, as long as they are reputable. Anyone on this forum is going to tell you CCCS or ICCS, because they are the Canadian standard. However, I, personally, would trust PCGS or NGC with it as well (although I would be reluctant to believe the grade that NGC assigns).
