I feel like I have seen these tokens(?) on the forum before, but I cannot find any previous threads. So any info on this coin would be appreciated!

That's an odd one. I've seen "Spielmarke" (play money) with a similar design, but not a "Schussmarke".

"Schuss" is German for "shot" and like the English word, has several meanings: ammunition for a gun, the wound or damage caused by a gun, the sound of a gun, or a small glass of strong liquor. "Marke" is German for money or token.

If I had to guess, I'd say it's a token for use at a shooting festival. I had a few such tokens I knew nothing about; I posted them in this old thread. Unfortunately the pictures of mine were accidentally deleted from the CCF database, but schutzenfester's answer is worth noting: at shooting festivals, you'd purchase tokens when you went in, which you'd then use to buy ammo and such.

Sap- Thanks! That is really cool to know. It would be interesting to find out where in Germany this shooting festival took place. I wonder if this particular token is rare.

DCH- Awesome! Thanks for the link. I must admit that I am having a little bit of trouble reading the website since much of it is in German. Is the 1862 coin listed as being from Frankfurt?

Deutsches Bundesschiessen Frankfurt
(Bundes - Federal/National Schiessen - shoot)
I think this translates to something like: German national shoot - Frankfurt

A search for Bundesschiessen returns more info than I want to read about German/Austrian shooting contests.

Yes, the Deutsches Bundesschiessen (German Confederate Shooting Festival) was in Frankfurt in 1862. According to German Wikipedia, the next one wasn't held until 1868 in Vienna, Austria. Your 1863 token must be for a local event, presumably also in Frankfurt since the same token design was used.

So are there any guesses as to the possible value of this token?

not rare at all.
the one at the web site listed above is in absolute super condition and the dealer is only asking Euro 35, roughly $ 50. and I am sure He would take less.
