But why aren't the numbers (12) shifted as well?

My guess would be that it is an altered note rather than a BEP error.

As zeewool says, I think it's altered. If it were an actual print shift you wouldn't have vestiges of the branch seal on the left. And the branch numbers would be shifted also. And notice that the "ghost" of the branch seal is located properly but the "print shift" on the right is higher than it should be.

I've seen a several of these on ebay and in all cases it's an added seal on the right in some "strange" location and a removed seal on the left.

That's a good one to go with the "Orange Seal" notes that are just red seal notes that have been chemically altered to turn the red seal orange.

Wd, I posted about this topic here, but no one ever got back.

If you look to the left you can clearly see the district seal being tampered with solvents (jmo) and it goes up to the lettering and down to the SN. The only way you can confirm this is with the note in hand. Apparently when inks are tampered with - the note does NOT smell like money. Some give out a strong order which cannot be gotten rid of.

It's possible that this person found this in circulation which was someone else's chemistry / printing project.

FWIW, I have seen a few in searching fed straps and just pass on by (ink smudge, solvent smears). Cos, the cost benefit of confirming the error is not worth the effort.

Peace

It has been altered. I laugh at the poor sucker that is paying at least $70 for something they could make at home. Caveat emptor. Although I don't think the seller knows it is altered because they have a return policy and they wouldn't if they did it. Maybe someone should message the buyer...

If it was chemically altered, does the FRB seal come off in one piece? I wonder how they managed to do it... with the seal still the right way up.

They just removed the seal then had a stamp of the FRB that the put on the note. I'm sure you can buy them somewhere. At least they used the correct FRB stamp. Someone started a thread here a while ago where someone did this to a note but didn't use the right FRB seal.
