OK. I've mentioned on here before that while alive, my dad bought coins at the flea market every Monday for about 20-25 years. While home over the weekend, my Mom brought it up and said there are hundreds of rolls of wheat pennies in some steel boxes stored in various rooms of the house. She said they all had dates on the rolls. I went through two steel boxes - just amazed. There are rolls from 1909 (no S VDBs darnit), 1910, 1913, 1915, 1917, 1918, 1919, etc. Just a few years missing. Not many D mint rolls until the 30's and up. Many of the wrappers were falling apart. There were several rolls labeled BU - I just popped open an end and yes, BU on the end. I had no time to really go through it all. I did tell Mom that there were several hundred, probably thousands of dollars of wheats just in the two steel boxes (about 150 rolls each) that I went into. And she needed to decide what she wants to do with it. She had contemplated taking them to the bank - thank goodness she didn't. She had already deposited (face value) about $600 in State Quarter rolls from 99-06 (Dad passed in 06). She said the teller told her she had a customer who'd be thrilled to get those. I told her not to take ANYTHING else to the bank, if she needed money to call. I did go through the 1909 rolls - they are all regular 1909's - same with the 1910's and 1913's. Since I'm not a big Lincoln collector or loaded with Lincoln knowledge, what would you guys say these would be worth by the roll? They are all circulated with the occasional AU example, mostly in what I'd call VG to F condition, clear dates, decent detail left on reverses, etc. There is almost NO corrosion. By her guestimates - there are probably another 300-400 rolls in a safe in the garage..........(rolling my eyes......) She said he used to pay $.55 a roll in the 80's for these, but over the last few years he paid $1 each.

Wow! Tough question. You may want to pick up a greysheet. It has circulated roll prices on them.
For example, 1910's are listed as $13-14, 1913's are listed for $25-27.
If you decide you want to sell some singles, I need some serious upgrades and would be very interested in meeting with you. Are you going to the Brandon show next weekend? Regardless if you sell, it would be cool just to meet you.

I have a greysheet and didn't even think to look as I'm so used to just looking at the SLQ and Walker sections. Geez - what a knucklehead. LOL. I know my Mom will want to sell some of the coins for income - she is retired and could use it. I was there because she was having surgery on her knee. There is also a boatload of silver, mainly mercuries and Roosevelt dimes and Washington quarters. There were probably 300+ halves as well. Oh - and she said there is about $1000 worth of Susan B Anthony's from 1979 in a safe deposit box. LOL. I have no idea what those would be worth......but he bought them all in 1979 and 1980. He never owned a coin magazine or price guide. He just bought what he liked, and put it away. I guess growing up in the depression in Alabama and not ever having money, he enjoyed being able to buy coins and put them away. He NEVER talked about it and growing up I never knew these existed. I can't make that show - I'll be in Georgia, but yes, we should hook up sometime at a local show. There is another in June and July.

You'll definitely want to check those '79 Susan B's for the wide rim variety! Those are going for decent prices $20-50/60? depending on condition. Unless you are going to put them up auction-style or ebay, I would be happy to look at Lincoln's, Washingtons, and some halves. You might even be able to convince me to start a Mercury collection! I think they are beautiful, I just haven't started on them yet.

There is an issue with alot of the silver. He had a bunch of it in a large wooden box, and an ex wife poured motor oil on it. He got it all out, but you can still feel the grease on them (and see it). I suppose there is some type of a soak that would clean them up. I looked through about 200 mercuries - mostly all 35-44 dates. A few in the 20's and a few 17's and 18's. There was ALOT more I never got to. I'll have to go back up there in a few weeks and spend a whole day with that safe, and a trip to the safe deposit box. She said he also has rolls of the American Eagles from throughout the 90's. LOL. She remembers being mad at him and them fighting when he paid $8 each for them.

I would think this would be a great place for you to put them up for sale - if they go for sale - you have my blood pumping just thinking about what you may find. I for one need some of those coins you mentioned - but if they go for auction after June 7th to Sept 10th I will not be able to get any - the 126' DECEPTION is up in Alaska and waiting for her Chief, me, to fill her belly with fish. Would be willing to trade Sockeye salmon or King crab from last years season of deadliest catch for some of those coins if you can wait that long. I can ship them frozen right to your front door. (will have Halibut also if that's more your liking.) I will keep my eyes open for updates on this but sounds like you won't have to much more info for a few weeks. A big thanks to your dad also for saving some history and making some too. Quote: I think I'd live in that safe and forward my mail!

Brent - be safe out there, what an awesome adventure you must have doing that!!
She is OK money wise for now, and we'll be waiting to get through it all. My brother wants to help catalog it. Mom is off of her feet due to knee replacement surgery yesterday for quite a while too, so maybe she can start with sorting. Lots of stuff is just tossed into bags, buffalos, mercuries, wheats, etc. I grabbed handfuls and just laughed as I told her not to sell anything or tell anyone she had it in the house. I told her she needs to decide what she wants to do with it.
Scooby - I will have to research the wide rim deal on the Susans. They are all in rolls according to her, so that may make it easier to search.

SD - I probably won't get into them until the end of the month, early June. I'll be in Germany for most of July, so really, its going to be a very drawn out process to help her get this stuff sorted.
PM me a list of years you need, I may have some here at the house anyway and we can work something out I'm sure.

Adam - I can't promise anything. Mom might not want to sell - and its hers, not mine. I did recommend to her to cash in all of the stuff that is simply just face value - lots of 80's halves, about $300 in bicentennial quarters, bunches of 46-64 jeffersons, etc. I'll tell her what to look for in each denomination for errors, or at least what years to set aside.
If she cashes in the face value stuff along with the Susan B's (after looking for wide rims) she can pay for her long desired Alaskan Cruise.
