Hi, This came in a small leather case and the white cardboard box looks just like those with dollar coins in them from 1967. Its silver and the toning does not show up correctly in the photo's. Did it come from the RCM and what would a ballpark value of it be? Thanks,

These are medallions for the 100 year confederation centennial.. One can find these on ebay starting at $0.99 and usually sell for $1.00 to $5.00 range

These silver medallions were also included in the '67 red box PL sets.Basically a bullion value item.

This medallion was also given away free to school kids during that same year. Single medallion in a cellophane envelope.

I'd say by the toning that one came out of one of the boxed sets.

Ugly, If it is silver, and came in a box, at some time, I would say it has been out of the box a long time, to have the oxidation it shows. Dick

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder....or so they say. Its far from ugly. It is silver and has been stored in a leather case which I think caused this toning, and no, it hasn't been out of it for more then a glance. But hey, thanks for your frank comments...I think. Too bad that everything produced in 1967 was made in such high numbers! Thanks for the information.

I don't think anyone slammed the medallion. I like naturally toned coins personally. Half the stuff you see these days has been dunked in so much solvent it breaks my heart.

Size looks a lot like a silver dollar. Maybe worth more than $1-$5 I would think. Unless it is plated.

akglen... your medallion appears to be the silver version. It is toned as for the aforementioned reasons(the case! ). Good pictures... so there's no need for me to post pictures of mine. Here's some more info... excuse the caps... its a copy and paste from my specs tables: 1867-1967 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF CANADA'S CONFEDERATION SILVER SPECIMEN COMMEMORATIVE MEDALLION. ORIGINALLY INCLUDED IN A CENTENNIAL SPECIMEN/PROOF SILVER SET AS WELL AS INDIVIDUALLY IN A SQUARE WALLET. IT IS 0.925 SILVER (STERLING). WEIGHT 24.5 GRAMS (0.787693 TROY OZ.). So, your medallion's worth about $15. The wallet would add about 5 bucks to the value. But, the rite buyer would probably part with 20 dollars for a decent example.

Thanks for the info IBGolden....exactly what I was looking for. Could you please tell me where you came up with this data? From your description mine is in the leather wallet. I'm thinking I should remove it from the leather wallet and store it in something else like a 2x2 before it turns completely black; any better suggestions?

It will fit snugly in a 36mm capsule for Canadian Silver Dollars, likely a size you don't have around. PM me and I'll send you one in the mail gratis.

AKglen, I was not slamming the medal. I recall a house we rented many years ago, that had a large pure copper hood, above the stove. I thought it had been painted black. Then I camo home from work one day, and it was a beautiful copper hood! I have seen silver tarnish, (oxidation), due to various causes, from natural atmospheris, to smoggy crap in the air we breathe, so I thought it was a natural toning, due to having been out of the"holder". The toning is not ugly. It is a natural thing, and can be very beautiful, depending on what caused it. Dick

... ahh, sorry... I musta dozed off there Due to my laziness, here's a link to your case(single/black) for the sterling version medallion... VVV http://www.coinpage.com/1967-pictures.html... and the set with sterling medallion(set/red)VVV http://www.colonialacres.com/cgi-bi...sp_1867-1967The black case set has the $20 gold coin and can also be seen on the first link's site. So, the medallion's from the RCM. My info came from sellers, but I was familiar with the item before... I will check my Charlton momentarily... >>> edit >>> My 61st edition Charlton offers no further info other than the red set(silver medallion) is "proof-like finish" and the black set(gold $20) is "specimen finish". The silver medallion was designed by Thomas Shingles... a familiar name as such at the RCM.
