I recently sent a coin to ANACS to get the date established but they sent it back and said it was illegible. Is there any company that has the adequate equipment to establish the date? The coin is not too bad of shape but I guess they did not want to spend a little effort for 15 bucks which they kept. Any input will help. Thanks

Why are you trying to get the coin slabbed in the first place? It most likely is a 1997 due to the scarcity of the 1992 Close AM and even if it isn't the Close AM isn't worth that much in the grade the coin is in. There is no "special machine" that will say what date the coin is, if ANACS couldn't establish the date most likely the other TPG's won't either.

If you had the coin in your hand you would understand why I believe it 92. for that reason I am willing to take a gamble. I had various people look at it without stating my opinion and the majority concluded its a 92.

Even so, why slab it? Even if it is a 1992 Close AM it won't be worth much in that condition.

money is not a factor just having the thrill of being one of a possible four, also the overall coin is in pretty good condition.

Sorry, I think I lost my brain for a second. I forgot about the 1992 Close AM's value and rarity, and for some reason figured you were talking about a 1999.

If ANACS couldn't see the grade other TPG's most likely won't be able to find the date.

It would be a pity that no one can establish a date its there. there has to be something even like nic-a-date that can bring out the date

Nic-a-date only works by chemically attacking the coin's surface. Anything that might work in a similar way on a plated zinc cent would eat right through the copper plating and dissolve the zinc underneath.
