Ok so it should be obvious that I am pretty new here on CC and I have seen people posting many pics of there coins. So seeing how I think that I have the picture editing down I'm going to start posting pictures of my coins also. Here is a 1976 LMC that my father gave to me. Originally this coin was sealed in some type cellophane wrap witch I removed it from. So what happened to this coin during the minting process? Was the reverse hit first, then the "slag" (my vocabulary is limited) was deposited on the obverse as it was be struck? any thought and ideas would but very helpful. I'm new to coin collecting so any info will be helpful to me :)

It looks like a " Cud" to me. A piece of the die broke off and left a gap that filled in with extra copper. Those are very collectible.

Great!! that is good to hear. Collecting is so much fun. I'm only 25 years old I have been collecting for only 3 years, but this hobbie is as exciting as nething I have ever done. So is the reverse pretty typical of a Cud coin?

I guess I really shouldn't say it filled in with "extra" copper. The same amount of copper was there that was meant to be. Instead the metal flowed into the gap left by the die break.

Ask the pros: Would that make the coin ever so slightly thinner to compensate for the distribution?

As far as the reverse, I'm not sure Christopher, I'm still fairly new at this, too! Maybe that's the part of the coin that compensated.

Can't really tell from the pics.

But, I believe it is only a " Cud" when the rim is affected. If it is anywhere else, it is just a die "chip". I'll be corrected quick if that's wrong!

What are you using to takes pics with?

I'm not a pro, but from what I've gleaned here the loss of design on the reverse is definitely compensation for the Cud (which IMHO is huge) without an opposing die, there is no pressure to force the reverse design into the die. Great find!
Rest in Peace

so can anyone here give me an ideal on the value? seeing how alot of the value is based on the size and placement of the Cud, I am no-where near qualified to even place a simple 1$ value on this coin. Altho I have seen values between 5-20$ it seems to me that this is only attatched towards coins with much smaller Cuds. any info is helpful...thanks

OK, great coin!

the reverse is weak due to the balkasey affect, not sure if I can explain it though.

no, it is not a Cud on the cheekbone, it has to start from the rim and go out.

as for value, id say from anywhere from $30 to $40
