I would be curious as to Mike's take on this one as well.

If you look at the date, it is fully formed and nicely struck but is under whatever that folded metal (material) is.

To me , that means the coin was struck and it had to be damaged at a later time.

Bill, did you see the second set of pictures lower down on the first page? Maybe my eyes are playing tricks, but it looks like the rest of the date on top of the rolled up edge.

I'll go back and look. The problem though is that the date would be distorted if this happened during the strike and the digits of the date are normal.

I'll still take another peek.

The coin was vandalized outside the Mint. The details of the process employed are hard to reconstruct, but it's largely irrelevant.
Error coin writer and researcher.

thank you Mike , the coin is back with it's owner .. I can't imagine how this was done, from what I could see it all looked normal in every way except the extra metal, with no seam on the edge to make me think it had been tampered with
