I am looking to purchase one or more expensive proof coins for my type set album (earlier ones), and I just was wondering if there are any issues with these that I should be aware of. Commonly, I push AU coins carefully into the slot with a tissue. Is this okay with a proof coin? If not, what would you recommend I use instead (since sometimes the coins have trouble going in)? Thanks!

I've seen Cotton gloves in many stores. Even at the flea markets I've seen many varieties. However, to save yourself the necessity of searching for them, why not just find a really nice pair of cotton sox, clean them well and use them. Or stop worrying so much about your coins and push those in place with a rubber hammer. Of course you could cover the hammer with those cotton sox too. As to the tissue, please note that some are very abrasive and some are really soft. Even an Uncerculated coin can get scratched from a rough tissue. And if the slots in an Album are to tight, you may want to first remove the plastic slide, using a coin larger than the slot, rub the edges of the slot to widen it a bit. This may allow your coins to fit easyer.

i got a really nice pair of cotton gloves at the local bible bookstore after searching all kinds of retail shops - communion gloves
i did pay 6 bucks for them, but they are very well made, have snaps at the wrists and fit really well .. not like the cheaper ones I have used in the past at different places I have worked - I'm not constantly tugging at them to keep them on

If they work for you, then that price is OK. As an comparison when I recently left a hospital I looked carefully at my bill. I was charged $7/pair for those silly gloves the doctors and nurses wear and throw out after one use.

I Googled for coin supplies and browsed some of the online stores and reviewed their products and shipping rates to get a feel for it, since I'm starting to collect coins I might need some tools too.
Also when you search on Google you get local listings results so you can identify the ones closer to your location if you want walk-in and try them out or just buy them online if shipping is Free or of less amount, its hassle free. There is always good and bad in each Company just have to dig it out and find what fits us.
Happy surfing !

At a local flea market there is a guy with possibly a thousand pairs of gloves. Many are just Cotton with no linings, some are cotton with linings and many, many more. Mostly for $1/pair and less if you buy a bundle. Also, at a place called Dollar Tree they too have cotton gloves for $1/pair. If you still have a problem getting the coins into those slots, many automotive stores carry a press for putting seals in rotors and brake drums. Might work on a coin in a slot.

I was told never to wipe eye glasses with a tissue because tissues are made up of tiny paper fibers that could scratch the glass. Instead, you should use a soft cloth when wiping glasses.
I wouldn't touch a coin with something that I wouldn't touch glasses with. I actually use an eyeglass chamois cloth to press coins into their slots (although I'm certainly not dealing with proof or expensive coins).
Another thought is to use a Kim Wipe which are used in laboratory settings to clean glass slides and microscopes. They come in a (green?) box and are disposable. I don't know where you'd buy them, though.

I will keep that in mind, because from hearing that I am pretty worried at causing miniscule changes to the coins. Granted, many of my album coins are AU (and the MS ones aren't horribly expensive, but I still should make sure.
