I'm about 30 coins short of a complete Morgan Set. A friend gave me a Dansco for them. But, my dilemma is most are raw and others are slabbed. I'm trying to decide whether or not to crack the slabs to put them in the Dansco. I'm looking for opinions. Thank You in advance.

I would fill the Dansco with the raw coins and buy the rest to fill the album and keep the slabbed coins in the slabs.

I would be hesitant to remove them from the slabs, especially if they are in high grades and there is a big drop off in value for the next lowest grade.

Do you plan on keeping this set forever? If so there is no reason not to break them out of the slab. If you think you'll get tired of the set eventually and want to sell them I'd keep them slabbed, at least for the valuable ones.

I plan on holding onto the set,at least for a while. Maybe pass it on to my grand daughter. I have some that are vf 20-30 & some ms. I didn't think this decision was going to be so complicated. I've read in earlier posts of members cracking slabs for just that reason. I was thinking along the lines of documenting the ones that I crack, & saving the grade slip in the slab.

Slabs last an average of 5 minutes if I need the coin for my collection, I do not collect plastic I collect coins.

I tend to be of the crack them out school. Slabs are annoying and distract from a collection in my opinion. If I really want to sell I can get something graded again by the potential buyers choice of TPG.

These two comments jumped out at me immediately and I completely agree with them. Quote: I was thinking along the lines of documenting the ones that I crack, & saving the grade slip in the slab. I believe that is a good idea.

Chris,
Another thing to keep in mind is there is nothing saying you have to crack them immediately. If you are unsure just keep them slabbed and see how you feel once you've had them in your collection for a few months.

I crack all of my coins out of their slabs and put them in Danscos. However, so far I do not have any really expensive coins. I am in the market for a good 1916D Merc; when I get that, I will have to make a decision on whether I will crack it or not. I probably will since I do not ever plan to sale any of my coins.

I would crack it out - you bought the coin, not the plastic. IMO, THey look better inside the danscos that in the slabs.

Slabbed coins make a nice sound when hit with a hammer . Just kidding. I only buy a slabbed coin if it is MS 61+ and expect that I am never going to take it out of the slab. Otherwise I feel I can get a better deal on raw coins. Buy em raw and put them in the Dansco.

Well, I cracked a Morgan MS64 out of a PCI slab. Now I'm undecided on whether to crack a 1882 CC VF30 & 1883 VF20 out of NGC slabs or should I leave the Carson City coin alone?

I'm a cracker. That's me. I like coins in albums. A stack of plastic slabs does nothing for me.
