It's hard to say from the pictures, I would like to see closer pictures of both side of the coin and a close up of the mint mark. Because of the value of this coin I would suspect of it not being an added mint mark.

The date alone tells me that it was made in China.

The date looks fine in comparison to my 1889 CC. The MM might have been applied though.

If this date looks fine in comparison to yours, then you also have a fake.

1889 CC authentication is made easy....check out this :

Well mine was authenticated by NGC as VG so I doubt it is a fake. Mine has the same "9" that appears to be a little bit higher than the rest of the date.

Sorry xshift, I just clicked on the link that I provided earlier and realized that a person must be logged in as an ANACS member in order to view it. I have copied the following photos from that site (from an article by John Roberts) and posted them below. These are specimens struck from the five obverse dies used to produce the 1889 CC dollars. Match them to the original coin pictured; pay attention to the shape and size of the first 8 and its relationship to the 1 (especially at the bottom). Blow up the image of the original 9 and compare its pointy top to any of the following. I see many other things that don't look right to me, but the original photos are small, and armed with the photos below, the OP (with coin in hand), would be the best person to determine whether or not things match up.

Has the look of VAM-5 to me. No comment on authenticity - the photos are too small - so per zeewool's sage advice, the owner would have to make the determination.

I agree Dave, it does carry the overall appearance of v-5. The mm looks similar, the date spacing (from the truncheon) is correct. Dentil spacing from 1 to 9 is also correct for v-5. What looks so very fishy to me is the 1 to 8 relationship and the shapes of the first 8 'and' the 9. Could be PMD that has pushed the digits out of shape and position, but I doubt it. I 'have' been fooled by pictures as many times as not though.
The last image that I posted above is from the v-5 marriage, as is my only v-5 (actually v-5A due to the reverse break) posted below:

Don't associate anything that I say as being sagely though. I am far from being anything akin to a sage.
