So I received some mail yesterday from the USPS, in a new envelope, because the sorting system destroyed the original. But luckily some nice person made sure it was delivered to me. Only problem is all I received was the portion of the envelope with my address... that's it. it was empty, no return address, so I have no idea who sent it, or what should have been in it.

Please, If you ever ship coins, do it in at least a small padded envelope, that way it doesn't go through the sorter system and get destroyed...

I will post the pic of it later, maybe someone can identify their handwriting and we can identify what I need to claim to lost and found.

Personally, and I used to ship in envelopes but learned my lesson, the shipper is probably the one at fault. USPS's practices and what those envelopes go through is something anyone who mails things on a regular basis should know.

Sorry to hear about the error, hopefully it will all get sorted out (no pun intended) in the end.
Rest in Peace

I've watched mail go through sorting machines; it was like watching a high-speed combine at work. I was invited to view the process after some of my own mailing (a 24-page magazine) was ripped to shreds. I definitely changed some of my mailing prep after that experience. Definitely - always expect the worse and pack accordingly. Coins in regular envelopes are NOT the way to go, and I'm guilty of having sent a few like that myself. I should know better by now.

i have sent coins in padded envelopes and they gotten destroyed. I only ship in boxes now and mostly small flat rate boxes. Most of the time shipping is close to what that cost anyway and the box is so much better. I have learned trying to be cheap on shipping cost

I mail alot of coins in First Class envelopes but I use corrugated self-sealing coin mailers for protection. Because the mailer makes an envelope rigid, it cannot go through the automatic sorter/canceller and has to be hand cancelled. This method does add a 20 cent nonmachinable surcharge to the postage but overall it is still less expensive than using padded mailers for everything. I have done over 200 mailings with this method so far and have zero losses. Of course, the more expensive coins get the delicate treatment in a padded mailer and some extra bubble wrap
