Today, I went to My first coin show.
The show I went to was in Allentown Pa.
The show was probably 5x the size I thought it was going to be.
I recognized some of the vendors from local Flea markets.
Some of those guys, I have figured out that they are weasels and to stay away. But, I did chat with loads of dealers just itching to talk about just about anything, and help educate a novice like me.
I bought two pieces from the same dealer because he helped me out the most.
I'm still getting used to the lack of haggling within this particular hobby. Most of the dealers run smack on with gray sheet and don't deviate. some use "bid" price from the graysheet and give an extra buck or two off if asked. (it's not in me not to ask)
I spent right about 3 hours at the show, and that was just looking superficially at most thing that were there.
With everything that was there, it was very overwhelming. I need to gain a bit more focus on what I am looking for when I go into a show.
Wanting to look at everything and wanting a bit of it all just can't work.
Today, I decided to focus on filling in a few spots in my type set. (that still doesn't help the focal point though) I decided that an 1859 IHC was a good place to start, then I saw a nice 3 cent silver and a 1/2 dime that looked nice and that hit my focus for the day.
Just to add more of the plate, I got a few more dansco books for 10.00 each...now I have 4 more sets to compile. (Morgan, peace, franklin, and walking half)
I had a much better day than I thought I would. It was a much better show than I thought it was going to be.
I can't wait till I can go to another show.

Sounds like you had fun. Good to hear about they great buys you made. When I go to a show I try to get there before the doors open so that I can make a quick tour of the tables before it gets too crowded. After I get an idea of what is being offered up I can the focus in on what I really want to get. I do not plan on buying a certain type and coin before going because I usually see something I would rather have more and the any plans go out the window.

If it is a good show that last 2 or more days, I'll go back on the last day of the show. I have found that some really good bargains can be had in the waning hours of a show from dealers eager to make a few more sales to keep from having to pack things up and haul them back home again.

If the show was more than one day, I might have done that.
Problem is that there are so many shows or venues (flea mkts) that some of these dealers aren't really fussed with "making their show"
Also, the show was a short one day show.
show official hrs. 10:00-4:00pm
I got there just before noon, and one dealer was packing shortly there after. By 1:30/2:00 even more, then by 3:00, it was a room full of the packs.
Today in the same spot is a stamp show...I might just go look at what's there. As I have no wish to start collecting stamps, it might be good for some education

If you get to go to more coin shows, really take your time getting to know the dealers. Especially if they are the same ones at many of the shows. As you get to know them, try asking where they get their coins. Many purchase Albums from people. Then take the coins out and put them in flips for individual sales. Many just throw out the Albums. If they do, ask them for them. One dealer I know gives me all his all the time. One time he gave me over 40 Albums. Naturally I don't use them all so I too give many away.

Isn't it fun to go to a coin show?! I went to my first big show last January. (I've been eagerly collecting for a year and a half now.) The prices were reasonable, the people friendly and I spent more than I wanted to, but the coins where there. It's true..... when you see it and hold it in your hand you have to get it. Since my income is modest I usually buy on price and sometime in the future I'll upgrade and there were bargains galore.

I'll continue to haunt them when they appear around here.
