Certainly looks like a "S" to me. the second picture of the mintmark shows it the clearest in my opinion.

I paid $.85, I think I over paid :), but it was marked as a 12 D. I did not even look at it until I was going thru the lot at home...it was my lucky day!

There are so many perceivable variations from picture to picture, some of those variations including (to my eye), left off-center, centered, and right off-center MM under the dot.
I do see how some pictures show remnants of the serifs of an S I also see how it could be a (top) damaged D in some of the pictures, too.

This oldtimer suspects your coin's a 12-D that's seen damage to the top of the mintmark; this perhaps, causing an S to appear possible? The seller may possibly have labeled it properly so as to avoid any appearance of fraud to a wishful purchaser? This is purely conjecture on my part, and I tend to err on the side of caution. At most of the larger shows, there's a TPG who'll voice a cautionary opinion before one pays for a submission. Such an opinion may not be realized when the coin is returned, but you'll have an idea whether you want to pay the freight and invest more in the coin. If genuine, this coin needs to be slabbed. Good luck!

Does look like an "S" in some of the pics. The dot above it looks like a PAC MAN dot, you know the old computer game

It looks more like 2 lumps of metal than an "s" to me. I'm really not sure what to make of it. I'd send it off to a TPG for a second opinion.

Not sure if I want to spend the money to get it graded..it will only make a good, may even come back damaged. So then will it be worth the money that I spent to get it graded? I will just put it aside for now...

Well, in this case I'm concerned about whether or not the coin is a 12-s or not. If you are sure that it was a 12-s, I'd say it isn't worth getting graded. But when the mintmark makes a difference between a $3 coin and a $150 coin(numismedia price on a G-4 12-s is $150); I'd think it's worth getting graded and authenticated so you can confidently sell it as a 12-s to a potential buyer if desired. Grading fees aren't that expensive if you can send it in with some other coins via the economy tier. You say your 95% sure, then I guess there is no need; but if it were mine, I'd send it in. Just imho. :-)
