Has anyone seen anything like this?

Apparently a Jeweler in Nelson, BC used to stamp this on their Dollars.

There is an excellent article in the January / February issue of the RCNA journal on these JOP dollars..

Joseph Oliva Patenaude was a jeweller and watchmaker who lived in Nelson, BC. He was one of the people who was instrumental in getting Canada a circulating silver dollar. He would cxountermark a number of dollar coins- up to 1000 a year, and give them out in change.

Thanks for sharing this topic. I had never heard of these before, so I did some research and they do bear a pretty interesting story. I would also consider these coins defaced and wouldn't pay big bucks for it, but would definitely keep one if I came into possession of it simply for it's history in Canadian numismatics.

Dang. I am getting old. When I did a search on the JOP yesterday I typed in JOB. Brainless.

Found a really great article on them here: http://www.georgemanzcoins.com/cana...lverdol.html

Usually, I write down the date purchased and the dealer name, but I have no record. Bought this JOP probably in the 80's for $37. It looks like they have changed their status from mutilated-refuse-to-be-shunned to important-historical-artifact-from-a-coin saint.

Their value has escalated. Reason why? Each Dollar comes with a fascinating story.
