I purchased a 1982-D Jefferson nickel in the early 80's and at that time it was called a "Black Beauty" (this was in Denver,CO). The coin was and still is very dark toned, with some purple shine in areas on both sides of coin. Is anyone familiar with it? Can't do photo, sorry. Thanks for any answers.

Rick after I posted, I read your position as moderator, I messed up and apologize, but thanks for giving me an answer anyhow on the Merc. I did this with my scanner and this is basically what the coin looks like, except you can't see the purple shinnng and the mint luster. This is a BU coin and I have had it for over 20 years and it's the same color tone now as when I put it away. thanks everyone who responds.

it is believed that these nickels which toned black (Black Beauties) and I agree with the description !! are thought to be the result of a poor metal mixture, or contaminated wash at the mint.

Thanks for the education Rick, I must say that it is an
attractive coin, the picture you posted was of a 1963,
how early did these toned coins start appearing? I think
I use to have multiples of toned 1959 Jeffs. So, the 59,
your 63 and my 82 are the only ones I have ever seen, but
I'm sure they are quite common if you start researching the history.
