I saw this coin on craigslist

http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sfc/atq...8523918.html

I think it's rusty, my wife who's into coins thinks it isn't. For every person who says it might be real another says it isn't. I'm trying not to let the fact that it's on craiglist influence my decision. What do all of you think?

It doesn't look like a black beauty to me. Black beauties have luster. They remind me of looking at the surface of coal, very dark black but also very shiney. The nickel pictured is just post mint damage.

I think this question did more harm than good. My wife pulled out her black beauty nickels and said "Does this look like charcoal to you! And it's PCGS certified!" Looks like the couch for me tonight fellas.

What a load of baloney. He doesn't even put a price on it - just brags and makes up stuff. Hot air expert in action.

I hate to be the cause of anyone sleeping on the couch (it does pull out into a bed doesn't it?). The luster is just something I noticed on every black beauty I have seen. Black beauties are generally attributed to the planchets being improperly annealed or left in the annealing oven too long making them black. So if this is true, the black discoloration is there before they are struck. They are usually found dated from 1956 to 1959. What are the dates of your wife's PCGS nickels?

Landry:

with the other posters- that 75D is not a "Black Beauty" nickel

I also never heard of a 75D? Black beauty

I though they were made in the 1950's and mostly in 1959.

Here are 2 pics ( Obv & Rev) of my 1959 Black Beauty nickel.

The Obv has a small spot on the bottom of Jeff, but besides being black , it's very shiny unlike that 75D.

Hope these pics help.

the concept that they had 1959 planchets just sitting around to use in 1975 is just rediculous!
