Pulled this one out while we were roll searching earlier this week. I'm like 90% sure it's PMD, but with the talk of improperly annealed planchets over on the JFK thread, I figured I'd post pictures to get some opinions if that's what I had.

Some closeups to show the texture:

I'd appreciate your input! As I said, my first thought was blowtorch, but with the recent talk of improperly annealed planchets, I thought I'd check.

Just throwing out some ideas here, could it be a buried coin? Maybe sand blasted and the torched? Some sort of acid dip? Or an improperly annealed planchet?

I definately don't think it's been buried, I could maybe buy acid-treated of some sort, but from the color I'd have to say heat was involved.

One more bump for the post-weekend crowd. If no opinions...I suppose I've got a stumper!

Not an annealing issue, that would only discolor the coin. Your coin is suffering from some form of severe erosion(chemical or mechanical?).

It's a case of post-strike damage. The obverse looks like it's been sand-blasted.

Thank you for the opinions Bio and Mike. I guess this is a good example of where not knowing what caused the damage, doesn't change the fact that it is indeed post-mint damage.

I'll probably hold onto it as a conversation piece...and of course to confuse later generations.

Seems more prevelant on the obv. than rev.
Wear looks even on both sides. By the pics though it looks like
just the fields not so much the devices being damaged or ?
PMD most likely but I like to try to figure out at times exactly
what and how.
