Besides his face, you can see it on his ear, the back of his head, the "TY" and even the bowtie! I like it! One of the better MD's I have found. Although, I'm still a little baffled by the extra displacement of his forehead. Edited by Scooby Due 07/05/2010 02:18 am

A superb example of the "push doubling" subtype of Machine Doubling. I collect these and would be interested in purchasing it. If you have any desire to sell it, please contact me at md ia1 @ao l.c om. -- Mike Diamond

Like several other examples of severe Machine Doubling that I've come across, the movement is in several different directions. I see movement east-to-west (Lincoln's face), north-to-south (Lincoln's ear), and west-to-east (back of Lincoln's bust). Lincoln's face also records either a slight rotation or a pivot. How this is accomplished in a single "bounce" is something I've never figured out, and despair of ever figuring out. Still, it's fun to puzzle over.

numismo, that is some cool MD, what does the rest of the coin look like?
Mike, if you do ever figure out, please enlighten us! I'm sure there's nothing I could offer as an explanation in my feeble experience that hasn't crossed your mind already.

Interesting. If that 1990 was an 84 or possibly a 97 but did not exibit the face doubling it would be called a DDO (ear lobe) Also, how MD can show only on certain devices. Possibly MD in diff. directions could be a shake and a twist/turn or wobble all at once. I've seen verifiable DDO's/DDR's (actual die/hub doubling proven) that exibit MD attributes. No means am I an expert on these as there are so many examples, but there can at times be a very fine line between MD and true die/hub doubling. Etc.,etc.,etc....

Very cool. Very disciplined call with the MD, and not jumping strait to DD. Pretty sure I would have jumped to it and flew right over it. :)

I now have Scooby Due's 1990 cent with Machine Doubling. I have a few more observations to add to those already posted. Lincoln's forehead shows two "steps" rather than a single marginal shelf. The reverse face also shows Machine Doubling. Each of the 11 bays of the Memorial intrude into the steps. This north-to-south movement is supplemented by a west-to-east movement on the upper left corner of the Memorial. Truly a whole lotta shakin' goin' on.

I knew there was something different about the extra displacement of his forehead. I was so obsessed with the obverse, I didn't realize all that was going on with the reverse. Could we get a shot of that? I didn't take any reverse pics and would like to see the bay "invasions". If you have the time.

Sure thing. I'll take some photos of the reverse later this week.
