I have this coin that I have researched and cant figure out- maybe its not a real coin? It matches the description of the gold george v sovereigns and half sovereigns but it is much smaller. It is about 9/16" in diameter and weighs 2 grams. It is dated 1919. It isn't in terrific condition but I thought rather than give it to my jeweler for scrap I might check here. From what I researched some quarter sovereigns were made around this time but not many if any were released?

Would appreciate any information. My husbamd says it isn't real- I just dont know. It came out of an 18k old piece of jewelry and the debate is on in our household. He also thinks the face may have been washed with something since it is brighter than the reverse.

Thanks again!

No, it isn't a real coin. There were no quarter sovereigns issued. There had been third and quarter guineas (with totally different design), but those didn't go beyond George III, and even a quarter guinea measured 5/8 in.
Half sovereign had diameter 3/4 in (19 mm.) and weight 4 g. London mint stopped issuing the halves after 1915. In 1919 Perth Mint struck the coins but did not release for circulation (for the first time that year). I guess some jewelers were filling in the void.

Thank you for the info. Do you think its even gold? I guess my jeweler could test it? Now I have to go tell my husband he's right....

It could be gold. It could be gold plated. It could be just an imitation metal. Since it comes from an unofficial source, there's no way to tell the composition (unless you damage it while testing).

As for you husband ... it's OK for him to be right once in a while.
