Not sure what you mean by "Upright"
That looks like the normal G for that year to me.
If you find that G on a 1988, then you have a keeper.

I think now you mean the straight G without the serif when you said upright. One way to tell is to look at the vertical of the G
If it extends furthur out that the upper curl of the G that is the norm. for the 89
