I just bought a Dansco album for my Walking Liberty half dollars which have been living in folders. The series is not complete, nor are the coins of a high grade.

I was just about to move the coins over, when I thought I should somehow clean or wash the coins beforehand. I don't want them going in dirty and then staying there for several years. This series is a favorite of mine, and I want the coins to look their best. The only other coins I've put in an album were uncirculated ones.

So, should I do anything to the coins before moving them to the nice, clean album? If so, what should I do that won't damage them?

Thanks for reading, and thanks in advance for your help.

In a word, no., please don't try to "clean" the coins...I mix my Walking Liberty halves from G - MS63 in my Dansco..that being said, unless the coin had mud/dirt hanging off it, that case I would only wash gently with water...hope this helps,.....~billy

The only thing I did was give them a rinse in acetone and used cotton gloves when I was putting them into the album just to keep my finger prints off them. Beyond that, I wouldn't recommend anything else. However, I really like my old coins to look old. Try to get the highest grade I can afford, but don't care if they look old. It's a personal thing. When they are old and used, I often wonder where they have been, who may have had them in their pockets and what have they purchased? Maybe a sack of potatoes to feed someones's hungry children or as a tip when purchasing a $100 cigar.

The only thing you may want to do is give them a rinsing in acetone as CoyoteMoss suggested. That will remove any surface dirt and fingerprints but an organic solvent will not harm the metal or affect toning. You will also want to remove all the slides from the Dansco and dust the holes to remove any bits of cardboard scrap and dust. A can of airduster will work fine for that. Also remember to use a cotton glove(or even a clean soft sock) to push the coins into the holes.

Pending on the length of time those coins were in folders, check out the reverses for some of the glue that may have transferred to the coins. Usually noticed by a slight darkening in a sort of streaky appearance. If any of that shows, the rinse in Acetone is recommended. If not, I suggest you just place them in the Album and do nothing else in the way of cleaning.
