Ok anyone know what the value of these coins I have. The obverse has the date of 1960 and also at 9pm 1810 at 3pm 1910. The coin has two men the one on the right has a goatee and a handlebar mustach. The man on the left has a bald head. the script on the coin is INDEPENDENCIA/Y/LIBERTAD/SUFRAGIO/EFECTIVO/NO/REELECCION. On the reverse it has the words DIEZ/PESOS/ 28.888.G.1960.LEY.900 also says next to a vulture with a snake in its mouth. estados unidos mexicanos. Here's my question does the 900 mean the content of silver? What value other than the silver does this coin have. I got 32 unc dated 1960 for $100. Did I do Good or is this just another type of silver that is not worth much? Coin Hog

If you got 32 of them then you did pretty darn good. I believe the 28.888.G is the gram content (or weight) of the coin. An ounce is roughly 28 grams. The .900 does refer to the silver content, so that means 90% silver and usually 10% copper. I believe this is the one you are talking about. If you got 32 of these, then you did good. That is roughly around 28.8 ounces of silver. Silver spot today was 10.82. Multiply that together and you get 28.8 x 10.82 = 311.61. You paid $100, your profit is $211. That is just the silver. If you can sell them for $10 a piece you still make just about that also. I would say you did pretty good. Well, I tried to add a picture but it didn't show up. I did research the coin and found some for sell on ebay so I know it is the same coin. Ha, I got it!

Thanks IrishTrader thats the pic of my coins. I always worry when I do buy silver coins from other countries. I spin them and listen for that nice sound of silver. Thanks for the help. Coin Hog

Hi Guys
These coins have a Silver weight of .8357 ounce per coin, UNC value is about 9.00 each,, BU is about 12.50 based on Krause
32 of these for 100.00 is a very good deal,, even down here where I find these at gun shows and such they average 7.50 to 8 dollars each.

CoinHog - no one has asked so far and you didn't say - Where did you get these coins? This particular coin has been counterfeited in off metal and the forgeries are sold at bargain prices to people interested in silver bullion.
You said you are concerned when you "buy silver coins from other countries." That is a very good concern. I am always suspicious of bargain priced silver from overseas I always suspect a fraud.
Ringing a coin can be useful but can not always detect a silver plated brass coin - which does ring "like a bell" because it is also known as bell metal. Have you weighed the coins accurately? Can you post a scan of one of them? What does the edge read?

I have examined one of the 32 coins in the group of 10 Pesos. The coin is in fact real - so the purchase was a great bargain. The dies for the coin are fairly early state with a few lapping lines that may have erased a shallow clash. These lines do not detract from the fields. The dies retain a great percentage of the frosting on the raised elements (confirming an early state). There are some minor cracks evident in the die surface but none have progressed beyond hairlines. The strike itself is full with some " Strike Doubling" of the reverse legends. The state of preservation is near mint state but with numerous small bag marks and high point abbraisons. I would place the grade at AU-55. The coin weighs 28.85 grams versus a standard weight of 28.88 grams. The Specific Gravity is 10.158 which is within the allowable range of values for 0.900 fine silver. Congratulations George on a great deal.
